Intermediate-Pressure Turbine Rig

Overview

Full-size, low-speed single stage test facility representative of IP or 1st stage LP turbine.

This full scale facility is representative of the nozzle-guide-vane replacing the first stator in either the IP or LP turbine, as well as the subsequent rotor. These vanes are often subject to extreme geometric constraints due to requirements to pass structural members through the gas path. Due to these constraints they tend to be low aspect ratio vanes that cause strong secondary flows.

IP turbine 1

From its commissioning in 1996 the research on this facility has focused on the first guide vane in a stage. 5 separate PhDs have been undertaken on this facility as well as other research programs. Results from the facility are documented in over 20 academic papers spanning multiple areas within the design of turbines.

IP turbine 2

The facility in its current form has been updated to make the most of modern capabilities. Accuracy has been increased through the inclusion of real time atmospheric condition monitoring including humidity. Run times have been reduced through rearrangement of pneumatic probe systems. Down time to change test pieces has been reduced by taking advantage of rapid prototyping and easy install pieces. Variable inlet guide vanes allow the evaluation of off-design performance.
